A long-running family theater competition in Shanghai is expanding this year—adding full-length plays and bringing performances into shopping malls to reach a wider audience.
The international family theater showcase of 2026 Modern Drama Valley held its awards ceremony on May 5 at the Jing’an District Cultural Center, where honors including “Top 10 Outstanding Theater Families” were announced.

Now in its seventh year, the event is moving beyond short, family-led performances. For the first time, full-length plays have been included, opening the door to more experienced groups and more ambitious productions.
The works range from intimate family stories to reflections on life in a fast-changing city. Some are drawn directly from participants’ own experiences, blending personal narratives with broader social themes.

Part of this year’s competition also stepped outside traditional theaters. Semifinal showcases were staged at Life Hub @ Daning, a commercial complex, placing performances alongside shops and weekend crowds. The shift is meant to reach people who might not otherwise attend theater, while also bringing new energy to retail spaces.
Winning productions will return in a public performance season in the coming months, as organizers look to build a wider platform that connects theater with everyday urban life.
