Advanced child life services are shifting modern pediatric care from disease-centered treatment to humanistic, family-oriented healing, bridging theoretical research and frontline clinical practice in China. The new book Practical Skills and Classic Cases in Child Life officially debuted at the 2026 Shanghai Book Fair on August 14, marking a key milestone in the localized development of standardized pediatric psychosocial care.
Published by Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, the new release serves as a practical companion volume to the country’s first authoritative monograph Theories and Classic Applications of Child Life Support. Together, the two books form a complete professional system that connects theoretical construction with real-world clinical operation, filling the gap in systematic practical guidance for domestic child life intervention.
Unlike theoretical textbooks, the new book focuses on common psychosocial challenges faced by children and families across diverse medical scenarios. Structured into twelve chapters based on child development theories and family system theories, it adopts a progressive framework covering fundamental principles, clinical scenarios and intelligent auxiliary tools. While the previous volume explains “what child life support is and why it matters”, this new guide systematically answers “how to implement standardized, high-quality child life interventions in daily pediatric care”. It elaborates on full-process clinical techniques including psychological assessment, doctor-patient communication, procedural preparation, therapeutic play intervention and multidisciplinary collaboration, helping medical staff improve professional judgment and reflective clinical capability.
The book launch featured a dedicated interactive workshop themed “The Power of Play: Building a Warm and Smart Hospital for Children”. Medical professionals and volunteers guided children to paint and collage their ideal medical environment. Therapeutic play, recognized as the core intervention of child life services, helps young patients relieve hospitalization anxiety, express inner emotions, and regain a sense of security and control during medical procedures.
