Children’s Hospital of Fudan University continues to strengthen its professional medical social work system, launching new immersive experience spaces, national industry training programs and public welfare cooperation projects to further elevate the high-quality development of child-friendly hospital services.
On August 18, the hospital officially opened its Dream Medical School Children’s Life Care Experience Hall in the outpatient area. Centered on children’s independent health management, the immersive space integrates life education, injury prevention, disease prevention, health management, medical experience and humanistic care. With its iconic “healing tree” installation, the venue creates a soothing environment for young patients, who receive professional companionship and interactive life education guided by medical social workers.

Following the launch of the new experience space, the hospital hosted a three-day national training workshop on the high-quality development of medical social work, gathering over 100 front-line practitioners, administrators and academic experts nationwide to explore standardized system construction and innovative service models. During the event, the hospital signed a cooperation project with the Beijing Rongde Lisheng Charity Foundation to jointly build a localized pediatric palliative care system, covering friendly environment renovation, professional talent training, public science education, social-volunteer integration and rare disease support.
The continuous rollout of new projects builds on the hospital’s two decades of innovative humanistic service exploration. Since establishing an independent Social Work Department in 2012, Children’s Hospital of Fudan University has formed a standardized, systematic and multi-dimensional medical social work system supported by institutional setup, special funding, professional talent cultivation and university-hospital collaboration.
Currently staffed with 15 full-time medical social workers, the hospital handles more than 250 complex clinical cases annually. Social workers participate in over ten multidisciplinary teams, providing psychological counseling, family support and end-of-life care to fill the humanistic service gaps in traditional clinical treatment.
As a national pioneer in pediatric social work innovation, the hospital has created many industry-first practices, including the first hospital patient experience department, parent committee and ward social work team in China. Its flagship Dream Medical School brand has achieved full-scenario coverage across hospitals, communities, schools and online platforms, evolving from basic health education to systematic life education.
The hospital’s humanistic service matrix also includes signature public welfare projects such as “Xiaobu Home” free accommodation for non-local patient families, child injury prevention initiatives and chronic disease children support programs. In early 2026, the hospital partnered with Ant Public Welfare Foundation to scale up the Xiaobu Home project, establishing three national public welfare accommodation sites to assist seriously ill children from across the country.
Li Qian, Party Secretary of Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, stated that the hospital will further optimize pediatric palliative care systems, promote social work achievement transformation, and build high-standard differentiated social work brands to support the high-quality development of China’s children’s health services.
