Chinese piano concert virtuoso Lang Lang has been appointed Music Promotion Ambassador of Xuhui District, headlining a free public piano master class series that opened the 2026 Xuhui Renowned Artist Art Season at the West Bund Theatre on Saturday.
The internationally acclaimed musician offered face‑to‑face professional guidance to eight young piano learners during the two‑hour‑long session, sharing artistic insights and nurturing young musical talent.
Xuhui District has long fostered a rich musical heritage under its "Music Xuhui" cultural brand. Since its launch in 2015, the Renowned Artist Art Season has brought more than 40 celebrated artists across different fields inclulding pianist Kong Xiangdong and art director of Shanghai Ballet Xin Lili into communities, office buildings and riverside public spaces, delivering over 100 free art appreciation events and master classes in total.
The initiative breaks the boundaries of traditional theaters, making high‑end fine‑arts experiences accessible to citizens and advancing widespread public aesthetic education.
As the flagship opening event of this year's art season, Lang's master class marks his official appointment as Xuhui's music ambassador. In his new role, he will leverage his global artistic influence to support the district's goal of building itself into a top‑tier culture and art hub and bring classical music into residents' daily lives.
Open to the public free of charge, the master class gave the eight young performers a rare one‑on‑one coaching opportunity while allowing audience to experience classical music up close.
The young participants presented piano works composed by Mozart, Chopin, Liszt and Couperin. Lang gave detailed feedback on key performance elements including keystroke control, rhythm, timbre, and emotional expression.
Beyond refining technical skills, he encouraged young musicians to understand the stories and feelings behind musical pieces and build emotional connections with their repertoire, rather than focusing solely on mechanical practice.
He demonstrated passages on the piano and explained complex musical concepts in lively language.
Learning music is not only about mastering techniques as it also teaches people to listen carefully, notice layers of sound and interpret emotions in music, Lang said.
"For master classes, most audiences are young music students. They already receive very rigorous, conventional training from their regular teachers. The point of a master class is to step outside fixed mindsets and bring in fresh perspectives. A good master class should deliver solid expertise while keeping the atmosphere relaxed."
"Masterclasses are meant to broaden young learners' horizons," he added. "One piece of music can be interpreted in many different ways. I hope students can discover alternative approaches to the same repertoire."
Intermissions of the session featured performances by piano teachers, including Western classical dance pieces and an expressive four‑piano rendition of the famous Chinese work The Yellow River, enriching the artistic atmosphere.
Lang has consistently devoted himself to youth‑oriented music popularization and public aesthetic education alongside his packed international concert schedule. Lang Lang Music World settled along Xuhui's West Bund riverside in 2025 and joined the "Sound of Xuhui" Music Alliance, taking part in major local cultural events.
Lang Lang Music World Shanghai is the city's largest piano school. Its 1,200‑square‑meter facility includes 12 piano practice rooms, a dome concert hall equipped with a nine‑foot Steinway&Sons grand piano and a professional recording studio.
Since relocating to West Bund one year ago, the institution has hosted 15 special concerts, six high‑level piano master classes and multiple lectures. It has welcomed top‑tier international artists and hosted prestigious competitions such as the 12th Steinway&Sons Youth Piano Competition National Finals.

Xuhui District plans to roll out more free master‑led music appreciation sessions, free open‑door classes, and sharing activities at public venues across West Bund and Hengfu (Hengshan-Fuxing Road) Historical and Cultural Area.
These programs are designed to lower the appreciation threshold for classical music and enable more children and citizens to get close access to world‑class musical art.
