On May 8, 1935, the lyrics and score of “The March of the Volunteers” were officially published and made public in Shanghai for the first time.
Thursday marked the 90th anniversary of this historic moment. “The March of the Volunteers” was composed by prominent Chinese musician Nie Er and written by poet and playwright Tian Han for the film “Children of Troubled Times.”
A commemoration event titled “The Voice of a Great Nation: The Eternal National Anthem” was held at the National Anthem Gallery in Yangpu District.

As the first publication record of the lyrics and score of “The March of the Volunteers,” the collection of tunes published on several local newspapers on May 8, 1935, signified the official release of this song.
A themed exhibition commemorating the 90th anniversary of the birth of “The March of the Volunteers” started at the gallery at the same time.
Rare collections, including the original copies of the 1935 publications of the tunes, the shooting script of the movie “Children of Troubled Times,” and the first recorded national anthem disc dating to 1949, are on display for the first time. The exhibition, showcasing the creation and development of the national anthem, will run until September.

The original shooting script of the 1935 film “Children of Troubled Times,” which features “The March of the Volunteers” as its theme song, was brought back to its filming location at the current site of the National Anthem Gallery on Jingzhou Road.
This precious collection from the Yunnan Provincial Museum was unveiled at the gallery. It is the first public display of the shooting script of “Children of Troubled Times,” providing valuable reference for historical research and offering the public a window to touch history up close.
During the event, the National Anthem Gallery announced its first batch of 11 precious collections, including three second-level and eight third-level cultural relics. It also launched a new round of collection solicitation.
