A green and low-carbon travel way is promoted.
The Shanghai Carbon Inclusion Platform, tested publicly for six months, is expected to be rolled out citywide this year.
Carbon inclusion refers to quantifying and assigning value to carbon reduction actions in areas like green travel, energy conservation, resource recycling, and renewable energy use by organizations and individuals in Shanghai, based on published carbon inclusion methodologies.
It uses commercial incentives, policy support, and market trading to promote a green and low-carbon lifestyle.
Based on carbon market trends, Shanghai residents can generate about 0.1 yuan in value from reduced carbon dioxide emissions for every 16 kilometers of metro travel.
After accumulating a certain amount, this can be exchanged for public transport vouchers.

The platform
“The platform effectively translates complex concepts into an intuitive way to help people understand and recognize the value of emission reduction, encouraging active participation,” said Shen Lin, deputy director of the Carbon Emissions Department of Shanghai Pollution Reduction and Carbon Reduction Management and Operation Technology Center.
Currently, the platform offers four scenarios for earning carbon reduction credits - buses, metro transit, bike rentals, and pure electric passenger vehicles.
Specifically, each bus trip reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 422 grams; each kilometer of metro travel reduces them by 97 grams; each kilometer of cycling reduces them by 98 grams; and driving a pure electric vehicle reduces emissions by between 28 and 85 grams per kilometer.
On the platform, one gram of reduction equals one carbon point.
IE expo China 2025 is held.
Shanghai’s Carbon Inclusion Platform will expand into more application scenarios, covering clothing, food, housing, transportation, and consumer goods in the near future, according to authorities.
Many are unaware that in 2024, the annual average temperature in Shanghai’s urban area reached a new high of 18.8 degrees Celsius, the highest since Shanghai’s meteorological records began in 1873.
Last year, Shanghai’s urban area had 52 hot days (with daily maximum temperatures of at least 35 degrees), the second-highest on record.

From July 31 to August 11 of the same year, 12 consecutive days of extreme heat broke Shanghai’s 152-year record for the longest stretch of such conditions.
The platform plan was unveiled during the ongoing IE expo China 2025.
As Asia’s leading environmental show, the three-day event running between April 21 and 23 offers a business and networking platform for Chinese and international professionals in the environmental sector and is accompanied by first-class technical-scientific conference program.
It offers an ideal platform for professionals in the environmental industry to develop business, exchange ideas and network. Along with the increased market demand and big support in the environmental industry, the business potential in the environmental industry in China is huge.
