Shandong cooks up a feast in Shanghai

The event attracts foreign visitors.

From Yantai Fushan cherries to Jiyang Renfeng watermelons and oysters the size of an adult palm… East China’s Shandong Province is cooking up a feast in Shanghai with mouthwatering delicacies and agricultural products.

Along the Suzhou Creek, a market sizzles with squid skewers on the grill, tempting people’s taste buds.

At Tian An 1000 Trees in Putuo District, a variety of Shandong’s premium agricultural products are on display and for sale. These include corn oil, sunflower oil, ejiao (donkey-skin gelatin), peaches and nectarines from Yimeng Mountain, Gaoqing beef, and Yantai salmon. Some fruits are rarely seen in Shanghai.

For the exhibition and sale, the Shandong Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has selected nearly a hundred geographical indication products and “Shandong Fine Products” certified agricultural goods from 16 cities. These products cover six categories, including fruits and vegetables, tea, grains and oil, livestock and poultry, aquatic products, and nutrition and health.

The event features three unique zones: an indoor exhibition and sales area featuring agricultural products such as Yantai apples, salmon, Jiaodong sea cucumbers, and Shouguang vegetables; the “Shandong Snack Street” along the Suzhou Creek walkway which presents the authentic flavors of Qilu; and Qilu agricultural supermarkets and exhibition booths.

Imported products including fried squid, sweet corn fish balls, tomato-flavored diced chicken and almond tofu can also be found.

Fushan District is a core production base for large cherries, with 110,000 mu of large cherries and an annual output exceeding 90,000 tons. Cherries from the district are available as well.

Along the Suzhou Creek is the Shandong agricultural product market. Dozens of food stalls serving palm-sized oysters, squids, and Zibo roasted pears, are lined up.

If you think it’s too hot to visit during the day, you can come at night. It’s suitable for dinner and late-night snacks.

Shandong brings its agricultural products to Shanghai.

Themed scenes such as Jiaodong fishing village, Shandong granaries, and canal ancient towns complement the Suzhou Creek cherry blossom promenade. Intangible cultural heritage craft experiences and Shandong specialty food markets allow people to immerse themselves in Qilu culture.

The event will last for three days.

Shandong is a major agricultural province. In 2024, it total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery reached 1.28 trillion yuan. The total output of vegetables, meat, eggs, and milk consistently ranks first nationwide. There are over 10,000 above-scale agricultural product processing enterprises in the province, accounting for one-tenth of the national total. Its agricultural product exports have led the nation for 26 consecutive years.
