Sleep during travel top concern for business travelers

Poor sleep quality ranks among the top three concerns for business travelers in China, alongside hotel hygiene and adaptation to new environment, a business travel report by China’s global travel service provider Trip.com revealed on Friday.

China’s tourism revenue surpassed 5.75 trillion yuan with business travel expenses growing by 8.8 percent in 2024, marking a strong rebound.

However, business travelers often confront late bedtimes, insufficient sleep duration, and widespread insomnia, with over half experiencing insomnia 1-7 times monthly, according to China’s sleep report.

The disruption of usual biological clock and environmental adaptation to stress among business travelers had led to potential health risks, the report revealed.

Ensuring quality sleep during travel is challenging and some business travelers often prepare medications beforehand to cope with potential health problems, the report said.

Research shows that 50 percent of pain issues are associated with insomnia and vice versa, creating a vicious cycle that threatens health, according to the report.

On World Sleep Day falling on March 21, Ctrip and Kenvue, a worldwide pharmaceutical firm, jointly signed the 2025 World Sleep Day Initiative, marking the launch of the a business travel health campaign to highlight the importance of quality sleep for travel experiences and to lead the industry into a new era of “precise health care during business travel.”

Based on the initiative, the two sides will create a multi-dimensional sleep health ecosystem via internet platforms and retail networks.
