What happens when virtual reality meets space exploration? The “Lunar Plan: Moon Landing Prelude” XR immersive exhibition has opened at Shanghai Expo Culture Park in the Pudong New Area.
As part of China’s 10th Space Day science popularization series, the exhibition uses XR technology to create an immersive space-themed classroom, offering the public, especially teenagers, a gateway to explore the universe.
Unlike traditional exhibitions with panels and static models, the exhibition uses 5G and XR technologies to build a “lunar base” where visitors can walk freely. Wearing lightweight devices, people will be surrounded by a dynamic lunar landscape.

Wearing lightweight devices, people will be surrounded by a dynamic lunar landscape.
They can see the texture of craters underfoot, a starry cosmic dome overhead, and a life-sized Long March rocket model with detailed engine debris. When the simulated launch starts, visitors will experience the low-frequency vibrations of the roaring rocket, as if in a launch command center.
In addition to the XR experience, the exhibition features a space model area with Long March rockets, lunar probes, and rovers. Visitors can admire these models up close and experience the charm of China’s space projects.
A glimpse into the display
The exhibition draws big crowds.
Based on the “technology integration” concept, this XR exhibition offers a space-themed “family classroom” for all ages.
“We want to make everyone an active participant in space stories. When kids leave ‘footprints’ on the moon or parents recall the ‘Chang’e’ lunar mission, technology and emotion resonate across generations,” the curator said.
The exhibition runs until May 5, inviting space enthusiasts to the blend of virtual and real cosmic experience.
