Cultural park retains precious memory

Descendants of George Hogg visit the park.

In Shanghai, there is a special park that is particularly worth a visit during the Qingming Festival holiday, which offers a unique experience soothing the soul and makes people slow down and contemplate the meaning of life.

Here, you will find nearly 3,000 artifacts and historical documents related to distinguished figures, which include a piano used by prominent Chinese musician He Luting, a chair sitten by film master Xie Jin, the costume worn by legendary singer Teresa Teng during a performance and the desk of former Shanghai mayor Wang Daohan.

In a 2,000-square-meter indoor exhibition space, the Fushouyuan Humanism Memorial Museum inside the park in Qingpu District has collected the items of nearly 100 notable figures from Shanghai’s modern history, including Chen Wangdao, the first Chinese translator of The Communist Manifesto, poet Wen Yiduo, Ruan Lingyu, the most celebrated actress of Chinese cinema in the 1930s, and well-known Chinese artist Wu Changshuo.

The exhibition is organized across three floors, featuring three main thematic galleries: Ode to Life, Stories of Life, and Words of Life.
The park also hosts a monument of George Hogg (1915-1945), an Englishman who sacrificed his life in China helping Rewi Alley, one of China’s top ten foreign friends, and others set up schools for disadvantaged youth during the Anti-Japanese War.

It recently received 11 descendants of Hogg including Mark Thomas, Hogg’s nephew, and Peter Jarvis, Hogg’s grand nephew, who visited Shanghai to honor Hogg.

Stories behind the monument was shared. Hogg’s descendants were presented with two commemorative albums containing seven precious photos during the unveiling of the monument in 2016.
