A new direct flight route linking Shanghai and Shigatse City in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region will be launched from May 1.
Operated by China Eastern Airlines, the route with a stop in Xi’an, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, is scheduled to run from May 1 to October 25, with a frequency of two times a week, connecting Shanghai, Shaanxi Province, and Xizang Autonomous Region.
It will operate on Thursdays and Sundays, with two flights per week.

The new route will significantly cut the time and distance between Shigatse and Shanghai, promote exchanges between Shanghai and Xizang, facilitate the linkage of their culture and tourism industries and boost local economic development.
The flight MU6863 will depart from Shanghai Pudong International Airport on 6:45am and land in Xi’an on 9:10am. It will then depart from Xi’an on 10:35am and land in Shigatse on 1:45pm.
MU6864 will depart from Shigatse on 2:25pm and arrive in Xi’an on 5:15pm. It will then depart from Xi’an on 7:30pm and land at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport on 9:50pm.

Chartered tourism flights to Xizang with a blend of tourism packages will be launched in the future to lure more foreign travelers.
Located near China’s southwestern border and in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin, Shigatse is the second largest city in Xizang.
Shigatse has become one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Xizang due to its ancient culture, majestic monasteries, magnificent natural landscape, and superior geographical location. Dingri in Shigatse is home to the base camp of the world’s highest peak, Mount Qomolangma scenic area.

The 19th Mount Qomolangma Tourism and Culture Festival will open on June 18.
It will feature 14 major activities, such as the opening ceremony and cultural performances, specialty agricultural product exhibitions, unique cultural and tourism events with local characteristics like the Mount Qomolangma wedding and chartered flight tours of Mount Qomolangma.
